There is neither much of happiness in this flash cartoon series, nor too many trees.

But yes, there are friends; but friends who will not think even once (forget twice) before slitting other’s throat.

Yikes!

The show, whose episodes only last for 1 to 7 minutes, is gruesomely hilarious (if such a thing exists), which justifies the official warning, saying the show is not recommended to children below the age of 10 years.

The show is full of amusing animal characters, fighting each other, for one reason or the other, but some steal the show and catch the attention of viewers a little bit more, as they unleash the funny violence.

The characters which made me take notice have to be Cuddles, Lifty & Shifty, and none other than the Disco Bear.

Cuddles is a yellow bunny with ears which respond to his mood swings. It is one of the first to come out of the creator’s ink. Rhode Montijo drew him on a piece of paper and wrote ‘Resistance Is Futile’ on top of it, which lead to the materialization of this blood bath comedy. Being sly and self centered to the core, he is caring and friendly on the upper crest, which makes him one of the most complex characters of the show.

Lifty & Shifty are green colored raccoon twins, who share a love for stealing from their fellow Happy Tree Friends. When things go wrong, they turn against each other. Powered by their greed, they rain hell on other characters and rob them of their treasures. The cunning thieves don’t like to give away their steal and can even sacrifice the other, if the situation demands.

Disco Bear is the retro golden bear, who flaunts everything that the 1970’s era has to offer. The character dances on the music from the same era and loves to feast on hot dogs, eggs and bacon, while detesting fruits and anything green. The bear is a self proclaimed Casanova and shows off, quite often to impress the opposite sex on the show.

Even though, the series is quite violent and grotesque, it is definitely worth a watch!

The Happy Tree Friends are the most loved characters of all times. But, don’t get confused by the title as there is nothing happy about this show. However, I beg to say that it’s still damn hilarious.

Are you confused? Well, don’t be as I’m here to clear the air for you.

In all honesty, don’t be misled by the overtly-violent content of the show as it is just meant for uncontrollable laughs. It is not to be taken in any other context than plain humor.

Sure, violence is never justified, but then drunken-driving or kids smoking cigarettes are also not justified. People keep complaining over the violent content of this program, well for them I have nothing to say, except that it’s nothing serious. It doesn’t preach violence or killing, it’s just plain black humor that the show delivers. Nobody stopped manufacturing cars; after all there are millions all over the world who’re dying due to road accidents every year. And did anyone stop drinking alcohol after hearing about driving-under-influence cases.

Enough with the rants, the reason why we’re here today, is to discuss the most gruesome death sequence of the series. Some of you will point to Shifty’s death in the ‘Sea What I Found’ episode, while some will say it will be the death sequence of Sniffles in the ‘Tongue in Cheek’ episode. Or for some of you, the grossest death would be when Petunia and Giggles got crushed under vomit spewed by Splendid.

I respectfully disagree; it is Mole’s death in ‘Don’t Yank My Chain’ episode. In that episode, Mole got his poor little head, sawed in half in a saw mill. That is it folks, it was probably one of the most gruesome episodes as Cuddles got ripped from his torso, Handy is slammed into a gooey mess on the tunnel wall; Lifty and Shifty in a comparatively merciful death got run over by a train while the incorrigible Lumpy was crushed by a metal ball.

If that doesn’t tickle your funny bones, then I shudder to think what will.

I guess it was the initial conceptualization of the characters, that worked in favor of the show.

The idea for such an endearing animation show, first came in the mind of Rhode Montijo.

I guess you would like to know who he is.

Let me tell you, that he is one the finest comic book artists, in all of America, and it was because of this genius, that we are able to watch Happy Tree Friends online today.

There is a very interesting story behind Montijo’s co-creation of the Happy Tree Friends show.

Once, while working on another cartoon show, he made a sketch of some characters; one of which resembled a yellow rabbit.

After that, he hung the sketches at his workstation cubical, so that others could see them too.

When some of the executives of Mondo Media, the organization with which Rhode was associated, saw the drawings on the spreadsheet, they immediately wanted to do a short series, called ‘Banjo Frenzy’.

Later on, that series was refurbished to Happy Tree Friends, and you will be interested to know that the two characters drawn by Rhode Montijo, came to be known as Shifty and Cuddles.

I think Montijo deserves much of the credit, for presenting before us, one of the most unique animation shows in the industry.

Even though there is extensive representation of bloodshed, fans find it overtly exciting.

I think it won’t be an exaggeration to mention that all the characters have some magical appeal to them.

Voiced by Nica Lorber, Flaky is perhaps the most timid character of the lot. As far as her personality is concerned, the white flakes on her spikes differentiate her from them the rest. Sometimes the flakes seem like the dandruff.
